SKURUBRON BRIDGE

28 October 2024

We have exciting news at Bridge Drainage. After completing our first project two years ago in Sweden, we have now been assigned a significant project by the Swedish government, Trafikverket. In collaboration with COWI and Svevia, we are assigned for the renovation of a historic bridge near Stockholm. The bridge, named Skurubron, will have one kilometer of our drainage system installed.

Seven years ago, our CEO, Mark Visschers, met the specialists involved in Swedish infrastructure at a conference in Vancouver. Since then, both Mark and Erik van Garsel (Technical Director) have made several trips to Sweden, and Mark has also participated in Sweden’s most important bridge conference. This led us to a pilot and now a major infrastructure project for bridge drainage.

Corrosion challenges

In Sweden, we face a bigger challenge compared to other countries due to the cold climate for a larger part of the year, which increases the risk of corrosion from rain. Our system offers many benefits, especially for the renovation of bridges, by integrating our drainage solution and protecting the sides of the bridge that are typically affected by salt, water, oil, and road pollution. This 35-centimeter protection is crucial for bridge structures, and we also offer favorable CO2 values, weight savings, and eliminate the need for unsightly pipes hanging from bridges that can cause corrosion.

In the past, water was often directed to underlying rivers or nature, but Europe-wide and globally, it’s now recognized that this is not a long-term solution. Moisture and corrosion on critical bridge pillars could cause problems after 10, 20, or 30 years. With the Bridge Drainage KERB, we provide an excellent drainage solution that also improves traffic safety by rapidly draining rainwater off the bridge, with drainage openings every 10 centimeters.

Certification

Our products are certified by KIWA according to EN1433 standards, are extremely strong, UV-resistant, and resistant to chemical contamination. In areas where we replace concrete, we significantly improve the structure. For urban bridges, we can integrate even more benefits.
